The Version That Got You Here May Be Blocking What’s Next

The version of you that built the last chapter of your life may be the exact version slowing you down in the next one.

That is hard to admit, especially when that version produced you the trust, results, and opportunity. The habits that helped you win start to feel permanent. You work harder, carry more, and default to fixing things yourself so you can stay in control. Those habits can build a strong career. They can also become the ceiling that limits your next level. I have seen this in the military, in construction, and in leaders who cannot understand why growth suddenly feels like a burden. They are still winning, but the way they are winning is now costing them scalability, offering trust, and the chance to grow others.

Recognize

Pay attention to where your old strengths are now creating friction. If you are over-functioning, over-controlling, or refusing to let others carry their responsibility, the issue may not be effort. It may be your identity.

Envision

Your next chapter will require a different version of you. It will require more trust in others, more restraint in what you say yes to, more clarity on your purpose, and less attachment to being the one everyone depends on.

Shift

Stop asking, “How do I push harder?” Ask, “What must I stop doing so the next level can open?” That question exposes the habits that built the last win but are now blocking the next one. Those shifts are necessary if you want room for real growth.

Embody

Delegate before you feel completely comfortable. Develop people instead of managing every detail. That may mean giving your team room to learn, giving your kids room to grow, or hiring support in areas where you should no longer be the one carrying the load. Hold the standard without carrying every burden yourself. Mature leadership is not doing more. It is leading in a way that multiplies others.

Transmute

Do not reject the leader that got you here. Learn from that version of yourself, honor what that version accomplished, and then outgrow what no longer serves you in your next chapter. That is how you stop wasting energy on tasks that have outlived their usefulness and start redirecting that energy toward what will actually accelerate growth.

A Leadership Lesson I Learned the Hard Way

Some of the hardest transitions in leadership happen after success, not before it. Success makes old methods feel sacred. But the truth is simple: what once looked like strength can become control in disguise. If you cannot release the version of you that was built for the last chapter, you will keep forcing old tactics into new terrain and wondering why progress feels stuck.

The first time this became clear to me was when I moved from leading 3 to 5 Soldiers to leading the training division for an entire company. Before that, I could stay hyper-focused on my team and control nearly every detail. In the larger role, that approach broke down immediately. There was too much for one person to track, and my micromanaging version of me could not keep up.

Instead, I had to build and develop a team that could carry out their responsibilities. That allowed me to focus on the work that served the entire company, not just the tasks directly in front of me. Once I made that shift, the difference was obvious. My team performed at a higher level, people took ownership of their projects, I was able to plan further ahead, and the company benefited from smoother execution and better training opportunities. We stayed better prepared to complete the mission if called upon to do so.
