Look back every 90 days. What bricks have you laid? Are you closer to the leader you envision, or do adjustments need to be made?

I’ve lived this both in uniform and in hard hats. Whether it was getting in front of my Soldiers every morning to lead PT, or personally upholding the standards I expected from them, the consistency of character always mattered. People watch, even when you think no one is looking. And when they see steadiness, they gain confidence in your leadership.

On the construction site, I’ve seen the same principle at work. Leadership approaches may differ, but when you’re fair, when you hold high standards for everyone — especially yourself — and when your team knows you’ve got their back, they’ll bend over backwards to make sure the mission, project, or task succeeds.
